Other Ways to Give

“I want you all to know you mean a lot to me and you were my real and true family. You never judged me, left me in my hard times. You guys make our days better and we need you.”

– YWS former resident

Your gift makes futures happen

Youth need many supports to overcome homelessness: safe shelter, food and clothing, health cards and identification, emotional support, counselling and referral services, life skills training, educational opportunities, housing options, job search skills, social skills and recreational options. Through our programming Youth Without Shelter offers all of these supports to the over 1,000 youth who each year seek safe shelter here. We depend upon our supporters in the community as we work to secure the futures of the youth who call YWS home

We offer giving opportunities that can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you would like to make your gift online, by cheque or credit card, in memory of a loved one, or by participating in one of our giving programs (Room Mates and Adopt-A-Bed Monthly Giving),your support will reach the youth who need our help the most to break the cycle of homelessness. To personally discuss your options, please call the Development and Engagement office at 416.748.0110 ext. 26 or via communications@yws.on.ca . We invite you to visit our home to see how your support will build solutions to youth homelessness.

Donate online

Donate online by clicking here.

Celebrate a special occasion

Don’t know what to buy that special someone who has everything? Make a donation in their honour to help a young person on their road to independence. YWS can send a print card to that special someone on your behalf or you can select your own ecard to recognize the occasion by donating online. Or perhaps, when you host a party, request donations to Youth Without Shelter in lieu of a hostess gift.

Matching gift programs

Donate through your place of employment. Many workplaces now have a matching gift program for donations made to registered Canadian charities by their employees and retirees. These programs could double or more your donation to YWS. Here is a list of some of the employers with matching gift programs.

Remember a loved one

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is always a difficult time. Many people find comfort in making memorial donations to YWS in the knowledge that their donation is helping equip a young person with the skills for a better future.

Donate Securities and Mutual Funds

Donating securities or mutual funds, rather than cash, could be your giving strategy.

The Canada Revenue Agency does not apply capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Capitals gains are the increase in the value of your securities over the price you paid at purchase.
When you sell your shares for cash, you’re responsible for the tax due on the gain, even if you plan to donate the proceeds from the sale. If you pay the tax out of those proceeds, there’s less money left to donate. Your charity receives a smaller donation and you have a smaller donation to claim for your charitable tax credit at the end of the year.

You can donate your securities directly through CanadaHelps. Those capital gains aren’t subject to tax. This means YWS receives a larger gift, and you’ll benefit from a tax receipt for the full value of your eligible securities or mutual funds.

Donate through the United Way

Phone the United Way of Toronto and York Region’s Donor Line and ask to allocate your gift to YWS: 416.777.2001. When completing payroll deduction forms, you can also designate YWS as the beneficiary of your donation. Note: an administration fee of $12 is applied to the designated donation by the United Way.
